Angela talks to us about taking care of bunnies, reading stories about inspiring people, and why being helpful towards others makes her happy.
Angela Southern is a lettering artist and illustrator living in Austin, TX. She works at Trader Joe’s during the day and considers herself to be an introvert. You will soon learn that what makes her the happiest are the things that allow her to be helpful towards others.
For example, Angela spent the morning of our conversation taking care of bunnies at a rabbit rescue. This is something she does every Monday. At first, she was worried about the responsibility. When a bunny doesn’t want to eat their breakfast, she has to take their temperature and give them some medicine. But she has been able to learn how to properly take care of these misunderstood, perfectly quiet animals over time. So much so that she and her husband have adopted two.
As we mentioned, Angela also loves helps helping people. During the day, she is a sign artist at Trader Joe’s who loves meeting the people wandering around her store. If she can tell a customer might be having a bad day, she gives them some flowers. If they look unsure about a product, she opens it up a package and shares some food with them (Sometimes she has to convince them it’s okay and they totally don’t have to buy it.) It also doesn’t hurt that her day job helps her to get out of the house.
This is because Angela is an introvert. She is perfectly content to be at home alone, working at her desk, or running errands solo. She is always polite and civil but if she’s around people too long she can’t think straight. Thank goodness for cold brew, though. That’s her extrovert juice.
Writing also makes Angela happy. She had a blog in college that was mostly self-related but now enjoys writing for herself about reflections and observations. This is definitely connected to her lettering as she loves to write by hand. Admittedly, she doesn’t have the best handwriting and like many of our previous guests she also has to have the right tools in order to write.
If you want to check out some of Angela’s work, you can read her piece published in Uppercase Magazine. (Sidenote: If you’re into deep, high quality, visual goodness, check this magazine out!)
Angela adds reading to the list of things that make her happy and has a few recent good books on her list like Thou Shall Prosper by Rabbi Daniel Levin. Mostly, she enjoys reading biographies and stories about people who broke out of a mindset and did something inspiring. She gives notable mention to Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, Learning by Heart by Corita Kent, and Quiet by Susan Cain.
We learned earlier from Angela how much she enjoys helping others. She doesn’t discount the fact that she is probably doing this through her work, too (We couldn’t agree more!) If it brings a little spark or moment of joy to someone when they see it, she thinks that is meaningful. She’s never experienced anybody’s reactions to her work in person. So – go ahead! Record your awesome reaction to her stuff and send it to us!
What else makes Angela happy? For starters her hometown of Northern Michigan. Although she’s kind of obsessed with it, she probably wouldn’t move back because it’s a little too rural. Also on the list is playing the clarinet, her husband, working at her desk, eating macaroni and cheese, and her 4-year old niece, Ella.
