Brendan talks to us about volunteering in Nicaragua, minimizing his time on social media while traveling, and why traveling makes him happy.
What makes Brendan happy? Traveling both for work and leisure. The idea is to experience new places and getting out of his comfort zone, he says. It’s the thrill of discovering something for the first time. He compares it to running around the woods as a kid and encountering bugs, leaves, and new patches of grass for the first time. So many new possibilities to be open to!
In general, Brendan approaches things openly. In high school, for example, when he saw goth kids, he never judged or made fun of them. He was just curious to know why they wore black. That’s honestly his reaction to most new things&emdash;an open mind and curiosity.
Brendan attributes this curiosity to photography and storytelling. Both these things have helped him tap into many different activities, ideas, and experiences. This is part of the reason he started Peopledelphia. He wanted a way to meet tons of interesting people locally. The project allows him to get out of his comfort zone and discover the city a bit more than he would normally. Just like he is able to do when he travels, for example, to Los Angeles&emdash;a city he has found to be ultra creative.
Whether he is traveling for work or play, he tries to maximize each trip he takes. Full time work related? He reaches out to contacts to see if they are in need of photography. Personal? He extends his stay to meet with clients for Curalate. This may be because he gets an itch if he stays away from traveling for too long (Thus, any reason to travel is a great reason!).
As much as Brendan enjoys traveling, he enjoys doing it with a purpose. For example, at the time of this recording, he was planning a trip to Nicaragua over Thanksgiving break to volunteer with the locals. He enjoys this type of travel because it helps him connect more personally to the places he’s visiting and learn a lot.
Of all the places he’s visited, Berlin is Brendan’s favorite. The city is ultra modern, with grungy outskirts, and colorful open palette for graffiti. The people that live there work to live and live a modest life because of it. To Brendan, it seems as though their main goal is happiness. He wouldn’t learn German to experience it further, however. Everyone speaks English in Berlin.
There are so many places Brendan would still like to visit (Malaysia is on the top of the list!) He just hopes other people know how easy it is to travel when you have the funds&emdash;that’s what inspires him to tell the story of his travels. He is super strategic about minimizing his time on social media while doing so, however. Brendan happens to be really good at storytelling. Although he may build a Snapchat story while taking a hike, this will probably only take him 5 minutes or so.
Although he doesn’t go out of his way to say he loves helping others, Brendan genuinely gets joy from seeing others succeed. When he first started Peopledelphia, he shared things most related to his own life. Once he started using other people’s content, not only did the audience grow, he’s been able to tell many people’s stories and now has a platform to tell stories that needed to be told.
What else makes Brendan happy? The color light gray, new experiences, his roommate and best friend, Nate, and hearing his dad’s music. You can learn more about Brendan by visiting his personal Instagram or the Peopledelphia Instagram page.
